I did an IT project for a fortune 500 company, and their default DB was oracle. When I needed to role out the project company wide Oracle wanted $1M dollars in licence fees. I spent a weekend to change all the backend services to Postgres. The internal IT dept initially complained, but i did a side by side comparison and demonstrated the software was faster and more stable for this usecase. If I wassn`t so interested in device physics, i could have made a fortune converting people from Oracle.

It’s always a combination of the same things: the electorate having unrealistic services expectations, politicians making unrealistic promises, underpinned by unrealistic forecasts that can’t be supported by revenue streams even with confiscatory tax regimes or the U.K. ‘s relatively shallow municipal debt markets. Oh yeah, throw in a little bit of good old fashioned inefficiency, cronyism, and graft to top up the toxic brew. Politicians aren’t good managers, they are people pleasers. And voters aren’t rational calculators, they are emotional, fickle, and demanding consumers with a tendency toward self-deception and a lack of foresight or desire to plan for negative contingencies. You get what you vote for and what you can afford.

We should make it illegal for private companies providing services in the country from taking money out of it. A good start would be a law that all profits turned within the UK must remain in UK accounts and dividends can only go to shareholders who pay UK taxes.
